RAAD set out to build a test facility to experiment with our ideas around light transport and horticulture for the Lowline. Built with Matthews Neilson, Ed Jacobs, and JMDL, the lab was constructed in an old market warehouse on the Lower East Side of NYC. As an experiment, we employ the real sunlight gathering methods intended for the actual Lowline. As an experiential installation, RAAD was interested in exploring the larger context of the built environment; the Lowline uses a futuristic technology to connect past and present -- the Lowline Lab envisions what might occur in the distant future, perhaps beyond the time of human creation. “Someday tomorrow will be a long time ago”
