A massive brutalist block sits atop the remains of a ducal palace, in turn atop a Roman ruin, which sits on top of an Anglo Saxon site, all along the banks of the Thames river. RAAD embraces all elements of the historical layer-cake of the site, subtracting huge voids that burrow deep through the building’s history in every direction, leaving behind green public circulation and gathering spaces that knit together the plot spatially and historically.
